Visit from our Patron - Dr. Nicholas Sagovsky

On Tuesday, 5th November, we were honoured to welcome our patron, Dr. Nicholas Sagovsky to WERS. Nicholas visited to meet the team, discuss our work and explore how WERS is navigating the challenges of a shifting political landscape and recent community tensions, especially after the summer riots.

Dr. Sagovsky is widely respected for his dedication to social justice. An Anglican priest and theologian, he has a long history of advocating for the rights of refugees and vulnerable communities. He has held academic roles at several prestigious institutions, including Newcastle University, Liverpool Hope University, Durham University and the University of Cambridge. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Sagovsky was a driving force behind the Independent Asylum Commission, pushing for humane reforms in the UK’s asylum system. He also co-founded the Article 26 Project, which works to ensure that people seeking asylum have access to higher education.

Many thanks to the WERS team for such a warm welcome.

It was great to hear about all that is going on to help people seeking asylum and refugees through the many challenges they face.

I was really heartened to hear about the local appreciation and support for WERS at the time of the riots. Long may that continue!
