Campaign messaging event in London
On 20th September, Rudy O Centeno and Karlie Toame, representing WERS' Advisory Panel and Campaigns Group, attended the ‘Finalising the Common Message’ event in London, hosted by One Strong Voice and the Freedom from Torture.
This gathering brought together lived experience groups from across the UK to agree on shared principles and messaging that can unify the work of migrant charities.
The goal was to forge a single, coherent voice, ensuring that campaigns resonate consistently and effectively on a national level.
Key discussions centred on:
A call for a fair, transparent and trauma-informed system, free from political manipulation – removing refugees from the realm of political bargaining, recognising each individual’s humanity.
A universal appeal for safe and accessible routes for all those seeking asylum, irrespective of their origin, nationality or arrival date.
A broadened definition was proposed, recognising anyone who has faced injustice within the asylum system as a crucial voice in shaping and driving the campaigns going forward.
The event highlighted the need for concerted efforts in data gathering to back these messages and amplify advocacy for humane policies.
Reflecting on the day, Rudy, who also Champions WERS’s ‘Safe Routes Campaign’ said:
It was great to represent the North East and network with other organisations advocating for the rights of sanctuary seekers and refugees. This is a critical moment for change. With a new government in place, we must seize the opportunity to engage with decision-makers and push for humane policies that help people achieve safety.
Karlie, who champiosn WERS’s ‘Stop Anti-human rhethoric Campaign’ said:
It was a pleasure to be part of an event that prioritizes the lived experiences of asylum seekers and refugees. Creating a platform where individuals can share their experiences, loudly raise their voices and propose solutions is a crucial first step toward meaningful change. The engagement of our genuine experiences exactly what is needed in the UK to foster more inclusive and effective policies.
